HISTORIA DE UNA PIEDRA - THE HISTORY OF A STONE - by rock artist Loli Gambin

It is so important to celebrate the small moments of happiness with which we are surprised by life...

Last spring I turned 50 ... and I had my family organise a little birthday party for me. We always meet at my brother-in-law’s house: "El Campito". With all possible affection, they decorated the house in my favourite colours and details they knew would make me happy.

After the entrées and the paella (in Valencia there is no better way to celebrate a meal) it was time for gifts. All my family knows my passion for painting stones, how this has helped me in complicated times, what a good therapy it has been to sit in front of one rock and imagine how it would be later, how happy it makes me to give my rocks away and make others happy too.

At first, the gifts had nothing to do with my little hobby until the cake arrived imitating a pot of cactus like the ones I paint. Soon after though, “los niños", my nephews and nieces arrived in laughter with their own gift: a rock! It was so big they thought there was nothing I could do with it!

But the joke did not stop here

Immediately I began to think how to transform the gift into a thank you memory: a gift for my family to return this much love I had received.

The photos show the history of that transformation. I ended up drawing all the members of the family caricatured as bees, each with a personal characteristic that would identify them. The queen mother (my mother-in-law, my second mother), the karateka (Javier, my little son), the matron (my sister-in-law, Elvira), the scout with his compass (my eldest son Ramón), the nurse (my sister-in-law, Julia), the volleyball player and the baseball player (my nephews Antonio and Mario), the cook, because he always cooks for us (my brother-in-law Manolo), the cyclist (my husband), the heavy (my brother-in-law Toni) and all the others until completing this large family.

Rock transformation with colours and love

The process was fun, to imagine which feature of each family member was the most indicated so that later they would be identified in the stone. It was like imagining each of them differently, as bees. I was sending the sketches to the WhatsApp group and we kept on laughing and guessing who was who. Everyone liked the result and they managed to identify themselves with my drawings.

The stone finally returned to its place, to the place of the celebration, to "El Campito", my brother-in-law’s house, because this is where all the bees come together to form a perfect honeycomb.

Birthday rock back to our favourite place, "the honeycomb" - El Campito

I hope you enjoyed this little story. For me it was very special to be able to give back in some way everything that they give me. This is what I do with my painted rocks, I share a little love and I always receive more than I give.

What a beautiful story about the essence of happiness: give and receive love, share moments with others on this road paved with rocks that we should all paint with colones of joy!
