This week I had the great pleasure of talking with our RockStreet friend and outstanding artist, Débora Penachione. I must admit that, all through the interview process, the translations, questions, distance, time gaps, etc..., I was deeply impressed by Débora's passion for rock painting, her confidence in the benefits of painting on rocks, and above all, by her trust in people's power to improve just by engaging in any art pursuit.

Here is Débora's interview describing her artistic journey, her world, and her passion for the beautiful world of painted rocks. Aqui está a entrevista de Débora descrevendo sua jornada artística, seu mundo e sua paixão pelo belo mundo das rochas pintadas.

Hello Débora. Thank you for taking the courage to talk about yourself, your career and your dreams today. To start with, tell us a few things about the place where you are living. Olá Debora. Obrigado por ter a coragem de falar sobre você, sua carreira e seus sonhos hoje. Para começar, conte-nos algumas coisas sobre o lugar onde você está morando.

Resido numa cidade chamada Americana, a 130 km de São Paulo, recebeu esse nome porque teve uma grande imigração de Americanos, Em 1886, as terras da região começaram a ser efetivamente povoadas por imigrantes norte-americanos sulistas, que após o fim da Guerra Civil Americana se refugiaram na região,  mas também recebemos muitos imigrantes italianos ao qual sou descendente.

É uma cidade onde a atividade principal  foi indústria de tecidos, também é chamada carinhosamente de “A Princesa Tecelã”.

I live in a city called Americana, 130 km from São Paulo, Brazil. Americana was settled by Southern American defectors of the Civil war 150 years ago and this is where its name came from. Starting with 1866, the lands of the region began to be effectively populated by American Confederates who had rejected Reconstruction and fled the United States. Along with the Americans came a large number of Italian immigrants to whom I am a descendant myself.

Americana is also affectionately called “The Princess Weaver” for its famous cotton weaving factories and its fabric industries.

How did you start painting? How long have you been painting and where does the passion for painting on rocks come from?Como você começou a pintar? Como você pintou há muito tempo? De onde vem a paixão pela pintura sobre as rochas?

Desde criança por volta dos 5 ou 6 anos de idade meus pais descobriram meu dom pelo desenho e pintura, pois eu conseguia olhar os objetos e copiá-los, logicamente de uma forma bem infantil. Desde então, os lápis de cores e cadernos de desenhos fizeram parte do meu cotidiano de minha vida.

A pintura em pedras veio a partir do ano passado quando vi uma foto de pequenas corujinhas pintadas em pedra e tentei reproduzir uma delas, postei em meu facebook e aí, começaram a vir os elogios e pedidos, nos últimos seis meses se intensificaram meus pedidos de pinturas em pedras e é tudo o que tenho feito desde então.

What do you like painting the most? O que você gosta de pintar mais?

Gosto mais de pintar animais, tento reproduzir o melhor possível, principalmente o olhar, as paisagens são minha segunda opção, estou gostando de retratar cidades com pontos turísticos de meu Brasil.

I like to paint animals. I try to reproduce them in the best possible ways, especially when it comes to their look, their face expression, etc. Landscapes are my second option; I like to portray cities, tourist spots or buildings of my Brazil or from around the world.

Is there a stone that has a special meaning for you? Existe uma pedra que tenha um significado especial para você?

A very special stone for me was the first one that I painted ... a little owl. I still have lot affection for this painted stone and I preserve it dearly. To me, however, all my rocks are special because I see something wonderful in each of them.

**I often say that rocks have a will of their own, that they guide us towards how they want to be painted**
